If you live in North America your Fiat 500 is made in Mexico, has a 1.4 engine and is available with a traditional torque converter automatic.

Elsewhere, not so much. My 500, hired in Italy, was made in Poland (there are no Italian 500s), had a 1.2 engine and a Dualogic automated manual box.

It was fine. Economical, comfortable, reasonably refined, quick enough for keeping up on the autostrade and pottering around on country roads.

The much loathed automated gearbox was just fine too except for a tendency to select first gear on a very steep uphill road and hang on it wirh grim determination up to 5,000 rpm or so.

I’m booking another for my next trip.

I tell you the 1.4 is pretty inadequate for american freeways. I felt like I was constantly gunning it jut to keep it moving. The one I drove was a rental spec from the Portland Oregon airport. I bet the Arabath would be much better.

My Abarth is a little beast. Two people in the car, doing 80 uphill exiting SLC on I80, in 5th gear, and a stab of gas makes it go 100 without downshifting. Not quick off the line, but insanely fun car. I make it backfire on almost every 1-2 up shift, just to giggle.

It would be much better with the Manual to make the most of the power.
